For hundreds of years, gigantic buffalo herds roamed the Great Plains of North America.  These buffalo became the center of life for the Plains Indians because the buffalo provided the necessities of life - food, shelter, hides for clothing, and bones for tools.  The buffalo sustained the Plains Indian because buffalo meat is lower in Cholesterol, higher in protein, and contains less fat than beef.

Siouxland Buffalo, a fourth-generation family farm, started raising buffalo in 1972.  This family owned business now has approximately 400 head of buffalo on its farm, which is located just a few miles west of Grand Forks, North Dakota.  A slaughter plant was built in 1982, and the family has been selling buffalo ever since.  Siouxland Buffalo became an officially inspected state slaughter and processing plant on March 1, 2001.  The plant now slaughters and processes around 60 head of buffalo under inspection every year.  Because the plant is now recognized under the North Dakota State Meat Inspection, they are now able to transport their products on the interstate, which makes shipping to customers very easy.

Siouxland Buffalo is a memeber of the Pride of Dakota and the North Dakota Buffalo Association.
